Old structures around the old Hilo airport have been demolished and will be replaced, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Hilo International Airport is managing the demolition of existing structures at the West Ramp area inside the airport, according to DOT spokeswoman Shelly Kunishige.

The work also includes the testing and proper disposal of hazardous materials and the removal of the existing waterline and service laterals, which will be replaced with newer structures.

The existing Airport Operational Area fence will be removed for a new fence with gates.

There will not be any substantive changes to the old airport’s tower, according to Kunishige.
